I remember that episode in Friends when Phoebe and Rachel’s apartment burns down and they fight over who gets to stay with Monica until it’s fixed because Monica is the perfect hostess.
Having guests over is that time when we all get to play the role of the best hostess.
We want our guests to be as comfortable as is possible.
The most important is to set up the perfect guest’s room.
Your guest room should have all the privacy that your guests need. There are some guest room must-haves that make it very different from your normal bedroom.
While you have the whole house for your comfort, you wouldn’t want your guests having to waltz from room to room for the things they need.
Here’s a list of the essentials you need to stock up in your guest room so that all of you guests have a comfortable stay:
1. Bed Linen and Towels
Make sure you have a nice comfy bed and a coy mattress for your guests.
If a pull-out couch is what you have, that will also do well, as long as you cover it up with good bedding.
Make sure all your sheets are fresh and cleaned, especially if you haven’t had guests over for a while. Keep some extra pillows around, ones that are fluffy and light.
You should also have a number of towels of different sizes for different needs
You should have a wastebasket somewhere in the vicinity of your guest room.
If your guest has been traveling, he/she would have some waste to dispose of.
In order to avoid any clutter, have a neat, covered wastebasket in your guest room, or its bathroom.
3. Work Area
It would be good to set up a work area in case you ever have guests who need to work while they stay at your place.
A simple desk with a chair and table lamp would do well.
You can stack a few books or magazine on the side of the table and have some basic stationery on it.
Take care to make a simple and practical workspace.
4. Hooks and Pegs
Make sure to have a rack of hooks for guests to hang their coats and other clothes.
The best idea would be to have one of those pegs which you place on the door, as this would save space on the wall.
It’s a better option than simply throwing the clothes on a chair or other such furniture.
5. Ironing Table
People often forget this very essential element.
If your guests have been traveling, they will obviously have all their clothes packed up in suitcases, and wearing them again means they have to be ironed.
Have an ironing board set up in one corner of the guest room?
If you don’t have space for it, you can get a tabletop ironing board, o the ones that you can fold and keep aside after use.
Stock up on a lot of tissues in your guest room so that your guests won’t have to come running to you.
You can have a box in the washroom, and one on the desk, and even a small one on the bedside table. You can never have too many tissues.
7. Basket of Treats
What’s more welcoming than a cute basket of treats?
You can throw in a few candies, some chocolates and other such things for your guests to enjoy.
You can even keep a bowl of fresh fruits, and a jug of fresh water or bottled water in the room at all times.
8. Dressing area
If you have the space to spare, it’s a good idea to get a dressing table in the guest room.
If you don’t have the space for that, it’s completely alright.
Just put in a full-length mirror or a standing mirror.
A great idea would be to put it next to the wardrobe or closet. If you have space you can arrange for a small table by its side.
9. Hamper of toiletries
You should prepare a hamper of basic toiletries for the bathroom.
Otherwise, you will have your guest running to the store for whatever they’ve forgotten.
Toiletries hamper usually contains soap, lotion, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste and toothbrush, mouthwash and dental floss, feminine products, disposable razors and so on.
10. Hair dryer
People often don’t find the need to add a hair dryer, but it’s a really good option because it is essential for a lot of people.
Normally, they don’t carry it around because it is bulky and does not fit into small luggage.
Once you have all these things in place, you won’t have to spend a lot of time preparing for guests.
With your guest room ready, you’re all set to have a wonderful time with your guests when they come over.
